A Question of why the subjects in most of the photographs seem to have such sad looks on their faces?
One Answer: That African Amercians back then didnt have to much to smile about.

I notice in all family photos from that era, black, white and latino, that almost no one is smiling. It was considered the correct and proper behavior in a photo. I've also heard it's b/c the equipment back then took so long that you had to hold a pose for several minutes and smiling or moving could blur the image. I don't think most photos from that era had anything to do with whether the person was happy or not.

That is exactly what I was thinking! What in the world was there to smile about?
I stare at some of the photos, and just try to imagine what they might be thinking.
The children have very serious, numb expressions. Very sad indeed.
